Val Schaaf passed away Monday, January 8. We have lost a pillar of our social justice network. Val along with his wife, was the driving force behind living wage ordinances. He was also very active in supporting unions, joining picket lines often. As an active member of the Social Justice Center of Marin, he worked on public access through Media Action Marin and was a familiar face at Bay Area peace demonstrations. His dedication and continuous work on social justice issues will be missed greatly. He will always be an inspiration to our community.

Haitian Women Targets of US/UN Occupation
Athena Kolbe and Royce Hutson will speak about sexual assault and violence against Haitian women and girls by forces such as police and paramilitary troops following the 2004 US-led coup d'etat that removed the President, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, and Haiti's democratically-elected government.
Their study, published in the prestigious Lancet British medical journal in September 2006, found that 8,000 people were murdered and 35,000 women and girls were sexually assaulted in Port-au-Prince during the 22-month period following the coup. The study implicates UN soldiers in making threats of violence and sexual assault on the population.
Rape of women during war is a global issue, recognized - as a result of mass rapes in Yugoslavia and Rwanda - as a form of torture. Learn more about the pattern of gender-based violence in Haiti fueled by the US-backed occupation and what you can do about it.

Peace Mural
Fairfax Library
The Peace Center of Marin is soliciting public suggestions about content for the Peace Mural to be painted on the West-facing wall of the Good Earth Natural Food Store.
The acclaimed muralists, Susan Cervantes and Miranda Bergman, of Precita Eyes Muralists in San Francisco, will facilitate the meeting
The mural, to be approximately 800 square feet, will honor the life and work of the late Marin County peace activists, Lynn Rolston and Hannah Creighton. Because of the location of the proposed mural and the growing importance of the sane food movement, images included will also represent farming and agriculture.
This public meeting is an opportunity for all interested to bring suggestions about the mural’s content. The Peace Center encourages participants to bring images that might be appropriate for the artists to use as guides.
The meeting will be a dynamic workshop, led by accomplished artists and meeting facilitators. It will start promptly at 7:00 and terminate before the library closes at 9:00.

Non-Violent Street Action
Wear orange & join in participatory street theater / nonviolent action at Union Square (Geary Street side, opposite Macy's) in San Francisco. We'll have our orange jumpsuits, Guantanamo cage, and ribbons and literature to help engage passers-by and encourage them to become active in efforts to end torture and indefinite detention, and to repeal the Military Commissions Act of 2006.
We want to have at least one person for each detainee in Guantanamo, as Witness Against Torture is planning in Washington, D.C. ... so WE NEED YOU to be there!
Drums and other instruments are welcome. In case of rain, meet at Powell St. BART, in the unpaid area of the station.
